~ Zasha ~

Zasha huddled into the corner of the van nearest the doors. Now that the adrenaline had begun to seep from her within the illusion of safety provided by the vehicle, she could barely move. The men tending to Quannah were a whirl of frantic intervention, and she didn’t want them to knock into her. Her battered body couldn’t take another hit.

When the driver of the van pulled over, she wished she could shout out that somebody was following them. But she was still a wolf who couldn’t talk, a limitation that definitely wasn’t helping her situation.

She was left hoping the vehicle behind them was friendly. Why else would they pull over?

Even so, she wasn’t convinced. Of all the men in the van with her, she clearly understood the least. She stared up at them from over her torn leg.

The man named Silver had a scalpel and tongs in one hand while he emptied several vials of liquid from the med kit and stuffed these into his front shirt pocket.

When the sound of both front doors wrenching open reached their ears, Webb stared at Silver.

“Flynn and Cassie are out.”

Silver nodded, but didn’t stop moving. “If it sounds like they need you, you go. I can handle this without you, so long as you buy me time.”

“I’m going now,” the man with the gun said. “I’ll give you all the cover I can.”

Without another word, Trigger Finger pulled the handle on the inside of the doors, peeked through the crack between the two, jumped outside, and slammed the doors shut behind him.

The instant the van stopped shaking from the impact of the doors closing, Silver pulled the top off one of the vials with his teeth and told the man across from him: “Compress off.” Then he poured the entirety of the vial’s contents over the open wound visible on Quannah’s bare chest, and tossed the empty glass container to the side without looking.

Quannah gritted his teeth, but didn’t complain as the liquid hissed and sizzled, foaming and bubbling along his flesh as if it were searing it.

Silver tugged the top off a second vial, again with his teeth, and poured some of the liquid over the scalpel and forceps. Then he pushed the lid back in, and tossed it with his teeth back into his pocket. The vial landed atop the others with a clink.

Gunshots and shouts rang outside the van, making Zasha startle. But she didn’t remove her attention from Dark Eyes.

Silver sliced open the corners of the wound with sharp, quick cuts of the scalpel, while telling his patient: “The bullet didn’t exit. Hang tight.”

The angular lines of Dark Eyes’ face contorted while Silver carved, then slid the tongs into the wound, stretching it open.

Quannah’s eyes watered, but he held perfectly still. Silver’s hand didn’t so much as tremble as a bullet zinged the van, piercing a hole through the door and into the wall opposite Zasha.

Webb ducked. “Damn, that was close.”

Sunlight now pierced the dim interior of the van through the bullet’s entry and exit points.
